Write a 150 words in response to the journal:

Beowulf's good qualities according to the narrator.

Beowulf is portrayed by the narrator as never failing to be brave and courageous. Whenever there is a point in time that something is wrong, Beowulf is described as never being the kind who turns the other cheek. He is described as facing adversity and winning at all cost.

The narrator expresses how Beowulf puts forth winning above all else and that is why he is good. But it is also worth noting that it is a possibility that in his coming to knowledge of his own death, he is sad that he has no son, and that may be because he was too blinded by his passion for winning that he missed any opportunity to father a son.

In lines 2177-2183 the narrator mentions that "Thus he was bold," "Famed in war," and most of all "battle daring." Beowulf is a character who fits the description similar to Robin Hood but in a more violent and up front way. It seems as though the Geats would put a lot of importance on gloating and boasting about their stories of victory to prove their man hood and status as a warrior.

The explanatory notes explains that the phrase in the story "never, having drunk," meant that Beowulf was of never "having drunk mead with his companions." This would leave one to believe that the narrator means to portray Beowulf as being serious about victory all the time and above the spoils of his conquering. His portrayal is that he is never alackadaisicalperson or one to ever take situations lightly.

Beowulf is portrayed in the story as being one to fight for a cause and to fight fairly. He even wishes that as an old king he could still fight the dragon without a sword or armour and shield. Throughout the story the narrator speaks of Beowulf as the one to lead for a just cause as the ultimate hero of the anglo-saxons. Beowulf is not afraid of his death and judgement from god in the end. It is because of his honest and just characteristics, and the courageous display of his winning and conquering that puts his soul at ease.
