(1) A514 steel:

Est = 29x106 psi

σyst=100 ksi

ρst= 0.284 lb/in3

(2) 6061-T6 Aluminum:

Eat= 10 x 106psi

σyat = 37ksi

ρat= 0.098 lb/in3

a) Design thc thickness, t, of thc plate to prevent yielding for each of the two choices of material if a hole is not present.

b) Design the thickness of the plate for cach of the two choices of material if a holc is present. Use the criteria that the von Mises stress must be less than σyp/2. Assume the infinite width plate analysis.

c) Would the plate with a hole at the minimum thickness be lighter if it was made of aluminum or steel?
