How to Differentiate Instruction in Academically Diverse Classrooms discusses some key strategies on how to work with the parent of advanced learners. Analyze those strategies to prioritize them, which ones are the most important to getting the parents of advance learners prepared for your differentiated classroom?

When it comes to working with parents of advanced students Tomlinson (2017) highlights the importance having clear consistent communication and collaboration with parents. Three strategies that that are mentioned and I believe are important to prioritize are maintaining transparency, educating parents on the needs of their child, and maintaining proactive communication. Tomlinson (2017) makes it a point that being transparent about instructional decisions that are happening in a classroom, with parents will allow them to understand and strengthen their support. Sharing things like assessments that show their child's progress shows parents that their child is being challenged appropriately. By showing parents their child's progress it also allows them to put in perspective the needs of their child. Gifted students need to be initially challenged in order for them to continue growing. Helping parents understand their child's needs, readiness levels, and academic growth will help ensure they see the value of differentiated instruction (Tomlinson, 2017). Proactive communication is key when it comes to being transparent with parents and letting them know about their child's needs. It is important that parents understand the strategies behind the education that their child is receiving as it can help increase trust, rigor, and reduces the number of misunderstanding that may occur (Tomlinson, 2017).
