Expanding on last week's lessons and discussion post regarding gender expressions, or "doing gender," means how we use our bodies to present ourselves. We express this by how we dress, how we move, to inform society of how we possibly identify. Our text states that bodies are not merely biological objects but social resources: people draw on bodily appearance and behavior to signal gender, status, and health (Ryle & Carlson, 2020). For me, growing up, I dressed masculine, outdoors appropriate for my way of life at the time by wearing boots, jeans, and other rugged clothes. Mind-body dualism is the idea that the mind and the body are separate, and historically, this split has been gendered. Traits like logic, control, and rational thinking have been linked to masculinity, while emotions and the physical body have often been associated with femininity (Ryle & Carlson, 2020). I think because of this, qualities associated with men tend to be valued more, while emotional experiences may be overlooked. I think this also helps explain why people talk about a "crisis in masculinity" today. Need Assignment Help?
