Why you believe that religion ought not play any role

Problem

Both Aquinas and Maimonides attempted to provide a religious foundation for political legitimacy. Each of these medieval thinkers believed that the insights of their religions (Christianity and Judaism respectively) could be used to draw conclusions about just governance. For this discussion, I would like you to consider what role, if any, religion ought to play in guiding government leaders (or voting citizens) to create policies and laws that benefit a country's citizens. In your answer, I'd like you either to discuss how you believe that religion could play a beneficial role in government decisions or, if you prefer, to explain why you believe that religion ought not play any role in political decisions. As always, you should feel free to disagree with the opinions of other students, but please do so in a respectful manner.
