Why walker compares hope to a woman

The well-known poet and writer Alice Walker penned the poem, "Hope Is A Woman Who Has Lost Her Fear," in response to previous violence in Iraq.  She dedicated this poem to an Iraqi single mother, Sundus Shaker Saleh, who believed the Iraq War was premeditated.  In this poem, Walker uses symbolism which substitutes symbols for ideas, emotions, or qualities and personification which is another literary technique that gives inanimate ideas or objects human qualities.
