When the U.S. entered World War I, many viewed the war as a crusade. Indeed, it was essentially sold to Americans as a great progressive cause. Americans, they were told, were fighting "to make the world safe for democracy"

Yet when the war was over, many American soldiers came home from the war disillusioned. Why do you believe that there was such widespread disillusionment with the war?
