Problem: The social issue I am focusing on is homelessness. Homelessness is one of the most urgent and complex social issues in modern society. It is deeply connected to larger problems such as crime, limited access to education, and major disparities in overall quality of life. I have also experienced firsthand how unstable housing can shape a person's opportunities, choices, and daily life. I want to learn more about how homelessness limits career and education opportunities and traps families in cycles of instability. Understanding these patterns is important because homelessness does not just affect individuals, it impacts entire communities and influences the direction of social change.
From my research, I learned that homelessness in the U.S. has deep historical roots. After a brief decline following the Civil War, homelessness re-emerged as a national issue in the 1870s. The expansion of the national railroad system, along with rapid urbanization and industrialization, created new patterns of mobility that led to the rise of "tramps" who traveled the rails in search of work. Fast forward, the early 1980s marked the beginning of what is considered the modern era of homelessness. Several major factors caused this shift, including inner-city gentrification, the closing of mental health institutions, high unemployment rates, the rise of HIV/AIDS, a lack of affordable housing, and major budget cuts to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and other social service agencies during the worst recession since the Great Depression (National Academies Press, 2018).
