Why the excess inversion product decreases

The carbonium ion mechanism for SN1 reactions suggests an optically active starting material would give totally racemized product. In many cases, however, SN1 reactions actually give more of the product of inversion of configuration. In general, as the carbonation stability increases, the excess inversion product decreases. Extremely stable carbonations give completely raceme products. Explain.
