Why substance use disorder counselors understand tolerance

Problem: As a student, how would you respond to this classmate of yours, including in-text citation and references

It is important for substance use disorder counselors to understand tolerance, synergistic effects, and withdrawal because these are common experiences clients may face throughout treatment. Tolerance occurs when a person's body becomes less responsive to a substance over time, causing them to need larger amounts to achieve the same effect (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2024). Synergistic effects happen when substances are combined, increasing the risk of toxicity, overdose, and dependence. Withdrawal occurs when the body reacts physically and psychologically after a substance is removed. For example, alcohol slows the nervous system, but without it, a person may experience anxiety, tremors, or even seizures. It is important for counselors to understand these concepts because without this knowledge they could misunderstand a client's symptoms or recommend inappropriate treatment. For example, a counselor unfamiliar with alcohol withdrawal might mistake withdrawal symptoms for a mental health disorder instead of recognizing them as effects of substance use. According to Capuzzi and Stauffer (2024), counselors must determine whether symptoms are caused by substance use, withdrawal, another medical or psychological disorder, or co-occurring disorders. Substance use disorders can mimic psychological disorders like depression, neurological disorders such as seizures during alcohol withdrawal, and medical conditions like stimulant use causing chest pain similar to cardiovascular problems. Understanding these processes helps counselors avoid misdiagnosis and provide effective treatment. Need Assignment Help?
