Discussion Post I: Social Stratification
Meritocracy or the "ideal system based on the belief that social stratification is the result of personal effort-or merit-that determines social standing (Ch.9)" is what most of us are socialized to understand our class backgrounds and the class structure of our society.
Sociologists argue that social stratification in terms of class is not solely based on meritocracy. Explain your understanding of why individual effort doesn't fully explain why some people belong to the upper, middle, and working classes.
Discussion Post II: Outsourcing and Capital Flight
Why do some corporations choose to set up factories in places like Mexico, Bangladesh, or Indonesia? How do corporations benefit from taking their factories outside of first world industrialized nations? Why might the workers continue working at the factories despite the challenges they face? The short clip below is a clip from the film Maquilapolis: City of Factories (the entire documentary is uploaded on Youtube if any one is interested). The filmmaker gave women in Tijuana cameras to document their lives working at factories that make electronic products like Sony, Panasonic, Sanyo etc.
