Why should researchers and IRBs be concerned with the legal status of GSD people? Legal vulnerabilities may increase the risks to subjects from a breach of confidentiality. IRBs are required to have GSD members in states where there are no legal protections for GSD people. Researchers should advocate in the political arena for the subjects they intend to enroll in human subjects research. Researchers are required under the regulations to set aside money to defend human subjects in court for legal-related risks of subject participation.
