Why schizophrenia is a complex psychotic disorder

Problem:

Please provide a discussion response with APA citations and references to "Schizophrenia Schizophrenia is a complex psychotic disorder influenced by both nature and nurture. From a biological (nature) perspective, schizophrenia has a strong genetic component, with heritability estimates around 70-80%. Individuals with a first-degree relative diagnosed with schizophrenia have a significantly elevated risk compared to the general population (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2022; National Institute of Mental Health [NIMH], 2016). Neurobiological research indicates that dopamine dysregulation, structural brain abnormalities (e.g., enlarged ventricles, reduced gray matter), and impaired neural connectivity contribute to the condition (Patel et al., 2014). However, environmental (nurture) factors also play a critical role in risk and onset. Prenatal complications, maternal infections, early trauma, chronic stress, substance use (particularly cannabis during adolescence), and urban upbringing have been associated with increased vulnerability (APA, 2022). The diathesis-stress model best explains this interaction: a biological predisposition combined with environmental stressors increases the likelihood of symptom expression. DSM-5-TR Diagnostic Criteria and Severity According to the DSM-5-TR, schizophrenia is diagnosed when two or more of the following symptoms are present for at least one month (with at least one being 1, 2, or 3): Delusions Hallucinations.
