Why re-engineering can be difficult

Reengineering is when you go back and re-do or re-work something, to usually improve or to make better. The purpose is usually to increase productivity, reduce costs, enhance efficiency, better customer experience or mix a few things.

The issue that re-engineering can be difficult is the buying from the employees. You are basically getting rid of current state workflows and planning to do something new. Many employees might feel current state is working and don't want changes. It also can create fear as job roles and responsibilities might change or it might lead to reducing staff and people losing their jobs.

In my experience when there is a change, it usually leads to job roles changes and people getting fired who's roles are not needed anymore. For this reason, it is culturally hard to get buy in from the employees to go along with these changes. The key is good leadership that is transparent and also listens to their employees to get their feedback on things that could be improved.
