Why philosophy is preparation for death

Problem: Do you think that Socrates' view that philosophy is "preparation for death" makes life more or less valuable? Doesn't his position make life valuable only if in death, you (or your soul) continue to exist (in some other form)? Doesn't this put human life in service to an afterlife?
