Why opioid use disorder significant public health challenge

Problem:

Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a significant public health challenge worldwide with a substantial impact on morbidity and mortality. Out of 600,000 deaths attributed to drug-related in 2019, 80% of these deaths are related to opioid use disorder and 25% of those deaths related to opioid overdose reported by World Health Organization (WHO, 2023). An effective treatment is crucial for managing and overcoming addiction. Naloxone is an opioid antagonist, included in Suboxone primarily to deter potential misuse by blocking the effects of other other opioids if they are taken concurrently (Blazes & Morrow, 2020). Suboxone is a combination medication of buprenorphine and naloxone and is widely used in the treatment of OUD. Blazes & Morrow (2020), reports that when these products are taken as sublingual tablets, naloxone has minimal bioavailability and does not interfere with buprenorphine's efficacy. But when someone misuse it by injecting it, naloxone becomes active precipitating withdrawal symptoms by blocking mu-opioid receptors. This encourages patients to adhere to the intended route of administration. This reduces the risk of misuse and diversion. Need Assignment Help?
