Problem:
After careful review and research I have found that South Carolina has many healthcare shortages in several critical area . Three of the the most serious shortages impacting Charleston and communities are registered nurses (RN) ,physicians in primary care and specialty fields, and behavioral health professionals such as counselors ,psychiatrist and mental health therapist.
The nursing shortage remains one of the largest concerns in South Carolina . Reports indicate the state could have of the nations highest RN shortages by 2036 if current trends continue. Burnout, retirements, and limited nursing school capacity have made recruitment and retention difficult.
Another major shortage are is physicians, especially in primary care and rural or underserved communities. South Carolina officials estimate the state could be short thousands of doctors in the coming years. To help address this issue, the state has expanded broader use of nurse practitioners and physician assistants to improve access to care.
Behavioral health professionals are also in short supply. South Carolina continues to struggle with inadequate numbers of mental health counselors, psychologist and psychiatrist. Increased mental health needs combined with workforce burnout and lower reimbursement rates, have made recruitment difficult.
Healthcare organizations in Charleston, SC can use several recruitment strategies to help address these shortages.
One important strategy is offering tuition assistance, loan repayment and scholarship programs. Financial incentives can encourage students and healthcare professionals to enter high -need fields and remain working in South Carolina.
A second strategy is improving employee retention through better work environments and wellness support. Flexible scheduling, mental health resources, mentorship programs and reducing staff burnout can help healthcare organizations keep experienced workers long.
Another strategy would be to partner with colleges, universities and training programs in the Charleston area to create stronger workforce pipelines. Healthcare organizations can provide internships, clinical placements, residency opportunities and apprenticeship programs that encourage students to stay and work locally after graduations.
