Why linear or angular momentum is or is not conserved

A bullet of mass m0 is fired horizontally with a velocity v0 into the slender bar of a pendulum of mass m and length L initially at rest. If the bullet embeds itself in the center of the bar (at L/2), compute the resulting angular velocity of the pendulum immediately after the impact. You may treat the sphere as a particle and neglect the mass of the rod. Explain why each of the following quantities is or is not conserved: Linear momentum, angular momentum, Energy.
