Why is the iodine added what is the role of the magnesium


Problem- In a gridnard reaction Magnesium, a crystal of iodine, and a stir bar are but in a flask at the bottom of a reflux condenser. A solution of 3-phenylpropyl-bromide and anhydrous diethyl ether are introduced into the warm flask. After a slow addition and 30 minute reflux the product is poured over dry ice. This product then has HCl added to it.

Questions: Why is the iodine added? What is the role of the magnesium in this reaction? Why is the 3-phenylpropyl-bromide mixed with anhyrous diethyl ether? What does the dry ice do? What does the HCl do?
