Nature of Anthropology
I. What is anthropology, and what distinguishes it from other academic fields that study humankind? Identify, define, and discuss the 4 main fields of anthropology (and any subareas). What is applied anthropology?
Culture Concept
II. Discuss the concept of culture. Why is the concept of culture difficult to define? According to your notes, what is a good working definition of culture? Also define ethnocentrism and cultural relativism (with examples) and explain their effects on each other.
III. What are norms and values (define separately, with examples for each)? Why can such things as the clothing we wear or the vehicles we drive be called symbols (also give a definition for symbol)? What is a subculture? Explain the use of symbols in a subculture of your choice.
Ethnographic Fieldwork
IV. Define and discuss ethnographic fieldwork, using examples from your assigned readings and visuals. What are emic and etic perspectives? Identify and discuss 4 potential barriers to doing effective fieldwork (see class notes). What is the AAA Code of Ethics and what are the 7 principles of professional responsibility?
