Why is proper crime scene documentation critical in

With the expansion of the Internet, computer-related crimes, investigations, and forensics are increasing and evolving. Computer security and investigative practitioners are continuously challenged to be aware of the countless technological, societal, and legal issues that result in prosecutions and convictions. It is contingent upon the prosecution to identify and apprehend the perpetrator, and there is an abundance of cyber criminals to investigate. Therefore, there is a need for more highly trained computer criminal investigators.

According to the 2010 Internet Crime Report, the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) received the second-highest number of complaints since its inception-over two million complaints in a year and approximately twenty-five thousand complaints per month. Most of the complaints targeted non delivery of payment of merchandise, scams impersonating the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) (i.e., FBI-related scams), and identity theft. The victims of these crimes reported losing millions of dollars in online transactions (Internet Crime Complaint Center, 2011).

You can find details of the 2010 Internet Crime Report in the Webliography.
