I. Why is it important to determine the contribution of heredity (nature) and environment (nurture) in human development?

• Every person has a unique personality and behavioral pattern. Determining the contribution of heredity (nature) to human development is important because it gives us an understanding of how far a person can develop and how genetics influence an individual's personality. On the other hand, determining the contribution of the environment (nature) such as social, physical, and economic factors to human development can help us understand how these factors will have an impact on how a person develops. In almost every area of development, both nature (heredity) and nurture (environment) play significant roles.

II. What would it mean if a trait develops from both genetic and environmental effects?

• This implies that a person's characteristics reflect how heredity and environment interact. Phenotypes, which are the actual characteristics we show, are a reflection of both genetic and environmental factors. It refers to an observable characteristic that could be anything, ranging from a standard characteristic like height, hair, and skin tone.

III. Do you think behaviors are learned from nature or are they nurtured? From your own real-life experience, give a specific example on a trait and how it demonstrates nature or nurture.

• I think behaviors are learned from both nature and nurtured. Although, I must say that it is more so of nurtured, or our personality is more determined by our surroundings. Unlike my other siblings, I was a shy kid growing up. When there are family get-togethers, I can recall doing nothing but staying in my room as a child. I wasn't as outgoing as my other siblings. Every time my mother dropped me off at school and then left, I would always cry. Once I made friends along the way, I started to be more outgoing. Over the years, through life's experiences and environmental influences, a person can change or mature just as I did.

I. Why is it important to determine the contribution of heredity (nature) and environment (nurture) in human development?

• It's important to contribute to the understanding of nature and nurture to understand human decisions within our society. Great examples would be why serial killers are the way they are and why certain groups of ethnic backgrounds think and act the way they do in comparison to other regions of the world. Factors such as genetic makeup and our environment contributes to what makes us differ from everybody else.

II. What would it mean if a trait develops from both genetic and environmental effects?

• It's said to be a phenotype if a trait develops from both genetic and environmental effects. A great example of this would be monozygotic twins (MZ) being separated at birth developing different phenotypes while still sharing multiple traits known as genotypes.

III. Do you think behaviors are learned from nature or are they nurtured? From your own real-life experience, give a specific example on a trait and how it demonstrates nature or nurture.

• I believe both nature and nurture contribute to human behaviors. The minute we are conceived until the moment we take our last breath, everything around us takes effect into our own perception of our own behavior acquiring certain phenotypic characteristics.

On a topic that I've discussed with close friends and family members, I'd genuinely asked them if their future kid would be one of the quiet ones or hyper ones. I always assume my children would be more on the interactive side acquiring certain characteristics from me since I am an outgoing person and has always been a hyper kid growing up, however environment and prenatal development can definitely alter a child's cognitive ability.

A great example of a phenotype characteristic would be between my brother and I who are totally different in talent. My brother, being a music enthusiast and I being an athletic soccer player. I could say we both have the specific gene specifically "to detect pitch of a musical tone without any reference" or have genes that specifically that made us both athletic, however having different set of friends our keen interest at early childhood development separated us from being similar in that aspect (Cherry, K). We were both in band and had similar interest in music, however I being more of a social butterfly I had friends that played sports and I somehow got myself into playing soccer. I could say that my brother had the ability to be athletic and play sports as well if he was given enough exposure to that.

This is the example of other student reply ( so no confusion) :)

I. When it comes to developing various personality traits, parenting styles and one's culture can affect a child's development! Both are huge nurture factors. The culture one is born into can ultimately affect someone's personality, causing someone to be either more extroverted or introverted. Temperament and genetics (nature) might also play a part in extroversion and introversion. Also, in many cultures, in regard to parenting, males tend to be given more freedom, while females tend to be more restricted. This might lead to differences in introversion and extroversion.

II. I believe that both nature and nurture play a role in the development of a serial killer. We know that even though nature is more hereditary it can change if the mother of that serial killer had used drugs or alcohol while pregnant. While nurture is more of the environmental aspect of it. It's the examples of the parents and the environment in which one grows up in that has to do with the development of an individual.

Imagine the serial killer growing up in a household that had no rules or any type of discipline. That all the child ever witnessed was violence, drug abuse, criminal behavior, domestic violence, or even child abuse, the lack of care which then the child grows up thinking is normal behavior. Which in turn makes the child more aggressive and violent as they grow up. Then commits one murder and has no remorse and continues killing. That's why I believe it's both.
