Why is it best to have six or less life cycle phases in an EPM system?

Definition of Enterprise Project Management:- EPM is a type of project management that is designed for the effective management of large and difficult projects and breaks the projects down into actionable portions that are sequential to produce a final result.

Initially when creating a methodology people has no idea how many number of life-cycle phases are required some people suggested to have ten to twelve life-cycle phases. That meant that there would be ten to twelve gate review meeting because of this project managers would like to take lot of time for preparing paper work for gate review meetings rather than managing projects. Then decision was made to have not more than six life-cycle phases.

Good project management does not require more than six life cycle phases because lesser the life cycle phases lesser will be the time spent on paper work by project manager and thus he can spend more time on managing projects. So they can mange projects efficiently. It reduces the time spent preparing documents and paper works for the gate review meeting.

It provides good standard to ensure the projects are well managed the consistent that promotes delivery of quality of products and results in projects that are completed on time and within budget. Some of the phases look like initializing, planning, executing, controlling and closing.
