Why homer elect to include such feats of physical strength

Problem

Throughout the course of the story, Odysseus performs many great feats of strength that could be considered impossible or at least wildly over-the-top (such as clinging onto his wrecked raft for days at a time, the scene with him stringing his bow, and the discus throw in Phaecia). If Odysseus is supposed to be a hero of great wit, then why would Homer elect to include such feats of physical strength as opposed to showcasing his cunning further?
