Problem:
This perspective spoke to me throughout the reading and videos because the holistic approach is very important when trying to understand different people. My goals are influencing what I am doing right now because I have always loved being a part of sports and also helping others. Throughout my adolescence and young adulthood I always strived to help others around me on my team or in classes. Through these desires I began to formulate my goal of wanting to help others and stay close to sports. These specific goals allowed me to change my ideal job trajectory to where I am now, a graduate student in athletic counseling. Throughout my past I have learned from experiences that I like and some environments that I might not go back to. These experiences influence and have oriented me on a different path and towards different goals than I would have anticipated. For example, I was committed to play D1 hockey until there was a coaching change. This part of my past has been pivotal for me because it changed my goals completely. Had I originally gone to the other university I was going to pursue engineering. At the school I ended up going to I studied psychology, and found my passion for sports and working with athletes. I think the strongest way to apply a goal-oriented approach in my work is to have goals for individuals who I have in sessions. This is important because it helps me orient the session while allowing for changes depending on the client. I think it is also pivotal for clients to set goals because if they are in an open-ended session with no wrap up or goals for next time then it might seem as though work is not being done outside of sessions. It is also important to select goals that may be beyond our reach because there is always something more that we can strive for. Having tangible goals is always good to keep us chugging through life. However, it is always nice to push towards something that is a possibility but does not feel as close.
