Why ethical decision-making essential in counseling practice

Problem:

Respond to this post Ethical decision-making is essential in counseling practice. As a school counselor-in-training, I rely on the ACA Code of Ethics (2014) from the American Counseling Association and the ASCA Ethical Standards (2022) from the American School Counselor Association to guide my work in areas such as professional competence, technology use, multicultural counseling, and referral. First, ACA Code C.2.a (Boundaries of Competence) emphasizes that counselors practice only within their training and supervised experience. If a client presents with concerns beyond my expertise, ethical practice requires seeking supervision or making an appropriate referral (A.11.a) to avoid harm or abandonment. When using technology-assisted counseling, ACA Section H requires counselors to be competent in using secure platforms and to provide informed consent regarding risks to confidentiality. This is especially important when providing telehealth services. Multicultural competence is addressed in ACA A.4.b, which cautions counselors against imposing personal values. ASCA also highlights the importance of cultural responsiveness. In practice, this means honoring a client's religious, racial, or cultural identity and engaging in self-reflection to reduce bias. Overall, ethical counseling requires self-awareness, ongoing professional development, and collaboration when client needs exceed the counselor's scope of practice. Need Assignment Help?
