Why doesn't gene therapy cure cystic fibrosis?
Although a normal gene is introduced into a patient's surface cells in the lung, these cells are not the ones that require producing the highest levels of the missing transport protein. The virus carrying the normal gene cannot reach the deep lung cells where the normal gene is most required.
