Identify why the Brown v. Board of Education case was so important to the development of current services to students with disabilities.
Why does a student who is not eligible for services under IDEA may have disabilities that are covered under Section 504?
Develop a timeline of the history of special education and predict where we will be in 20 years.
Visit your favorite restaurant and take the ADA into consideration. Then respond to the following questions: Do you observe this place of business to be compliant with the law (ramps, height of doorknobs, mirrors, sinks, paper towel dispensers, wheelchair accessible within the restaurant, etc.)? To the letter of the law? To the spirit of the law?
Section B
Create a classroom layout for an inclusive general education classroom (K-12). Then make necessary accommodations to the layout and arrangement of the room to accommodate a child in a wheelchair, child with autism and a child with ADHD.
Design a brochure for assistive technology. You may choose one disability category to explore of your choosing or many. Then include high, medium and low assistive technology for each disability category. Develop three activities that might facilitate the acceptance of a student with a disability in a general education classroom setting for three levels, namely elementary, middle and high school. One activity per level.
Section C
Brainstorm the characteristics of a teacher who is culturally responsive. Be sure to include diverse abilities and then discuss why this is an important inclusion as well.
Create a modified three column t-chart that delineates race/ethnicity, language, and income level. Under each heading, you must brainstorm the factors associated with each and how they affect the education of students.
Using the risk ratio chart in the book, you must identify possible reasons for underrepresentation and overrepresentation of specific ethnicities in specific disability categories.
