Discussion Post: Social Roles & Role Conflict
All of us experience role conflict at some time in our lives. This is when the demands and responsibilities of separate roles compete for our time and energies. College athletes experience conflicts between being a "good athlete" and being a "good student." In fact, few athletes awarded scholarships to college actually finish college.
Why do college athletes rarely finish college? What part does the athletic subculture play in this? Based on the findings in this article, how could the graduation rates be improved? Do you think athletes are exploited by the education system? Why or why not?
