Briefly review the revolutionary events that took place throughout Europe in 1848. After achieving some initial successes, why did most of the revolutionary movements of 1848 fail? Be sure to include how Gustave Flaubert captured the contemptuous milieu following the revolutionary failure of 1848 in the excerpt from A Sentimental Education.
