Why culture requires unselfish regard for others

Assignment task: The debate rages regarding what level people are out for themselves in our culture. As discussed in the text, culture is the primary element that separates us from other animals.  I would like you to discuss this conflict between selfish impulses and social conscience from the perspective of where we are as a society.  Which way do we lean and why?  Look at the questions below and debate them (with civility) for this Discussion.

1) The text states that selfish impulses come from natural desires.  Do you feel that this can account for the level of selfishness seen around us (or do you think we are appropriately "selfish?")

2) Culture requires unselfish regard for others and cooperation as well as assistance to others including those outside our immediate circle.  How are we doing well or poorly in this area?
