Why communication is important in a romantic relationship

Problem: This is another response: Communication is important in a romantic relationship but at times problems may arise. Research has shown that individuals who provided five positive comments to every negative one were more likely to survive in their relationship. When individuals exchanged more negative comments were likely heading towards divorce (Lehmiller, 2017). Individuals may also engage in stonewalling which is appearing indifferent or show no emotional response to their partner's concerns (Lehmiller, 2017). This can lead to emotional loneliness which contributes to sexual disengagement. Since this partly explains how avoidance behaviors erode intimacy, but strengthening emotional connection can help mitigate these negative effects (Fernandes & Hernández, 2024). Avoidance on difficult topics can cause fear of silence or suppressing one's emotions. Research has shown that individuals with higher attachment-avoidance tend to rely on intrapersonal emotional regulation by handling their feelings alone instead of seeking for partner support (Mosannenzadeh et al., 2024). Individuals may also have poor listening skills which makes it difficult to communicate in a healthy way. This can lead to misinterpretations and assumptions which causes emotional distance or conflict. Practicing "I statements" can clarify intention which can build a stronger bond.
