Problem: Write a paragraph answering and reflecting on my peer's question: AUD often co-occurs with a mental disorder, one sometimes inducing the other, and complicates diagnosing and treating, which leads to my question: in what order do we treat these co-occurring disorders (COD) (Schatzberg & Nemeroff, 2024)? A thorough assessment is required (and still may not be enough) to distinguish between symptoms of AUD and an underlying disorder, specifically when a patient is going through acute withdrawal. For example, symptoms of depression or anxiety may be mistaken for symptoms of withdrawal, go undiagnosed and mistreated, and further perpetuate the cycle (Schatzberg & Nemeroff, 2024). Treatment priorities are patient dependent and may focus on treating one disorder at a time or treating both simultaneously with a psychiatric provider ((National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism [NIAAA], 2025)). Co-treatment with a common antidepressant(s), mood stabilizers, and AUD medication is recommended if needing to treat AUD with depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and/or psychotic disorders.
