Social determinants of health are critical in public health as they encompass the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age, influencing a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks. Considering these determinants helps tailor health interventions to address specific needs and disparities. For instance, the "Let's Move!" initiative led by former First Lady Michelle Obama emphasized improving physical activity and nutrition in schools. Particularly in underserved communities, which helped address obesity rates by considering factors like access to healthy food and safe recreational areas (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 2014). Conversely, a public health campaign that largely ignored social determinants was the early roll-out of opioid crisis interventions, which often failed to account for underlying issues such as poverty, mental health, and lack of access to alternative pain.
