Why are people acting rationally when they are friendlier

Problem

Perhaps surprisingly, field experiments have shown that strangers who encounter one another on the street (e.g., to ask directions) are friendlier around 4 a.m. than in similar encounters that take place during the day or evening. Also surprisingly, in both rich and poor neighborhoods street crime falls during those hours. Are people acting rationally when they are friendlier at these odd hours?

The response should include a reference list. Double-space, using Times New Roman 12 pnt font, one-inch margins, and APA style of writing and citations.
