Introduction of Self
Hello everyone, my name is Geneva. I am 36 and from West Virginia. I graduated with my BSN in 2021 and began my nursing career in a surgical vascular step down unit. I have since transitioned into working in a medical intensive care unit. In the beginning of my nursing career When thinking of what my next step would be I wanted to find a role that will be both fulfilling personally and professionally. I feel drawn to the role of a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and would like to eventually work with children and young adults locally.
Mission, Value, and Goals
Walden highlights positive social change as a process in which the student would apply ideas in order to promote development of other individuals or groups through the use of worth dignity (Walden University, n.d.). This is significant to my goal of becoming a PMHNP because I believe in the importance of adapting techniques & skills to best fit the patient in a way that would promote their own sense of worth and dignity.
A specific goal within The College of Nursing discusses preparing the professional nurse to promote positive change "by addressing the social determinants of health locally, nationally, and globally"(Walden University, n.d.). This specific goal resonates with me as I intend to provide care to a local population that has been adversely affected by social determinants. Many people are unable to access primary care and are even more limited in their ability to see specialists. I intend to offer care in a role that is critically needed where I live and intend to incorporate ideas within my role that would pursue changes in our current environment.
Networking
Networking is essential in order to grow academically and professionally. Networking isn't just growing your personal contacts list in order to obtain new opportunities, but it can be used to expand our own knowledge and resources in order to provide better care. I have obtained valuable information from more people than I can count throughout my career. I feel like this concept can be adapted on a larger scale in terms of networking. Blue Pipes states that "professional connection should be based on interactions that involve knowledge sharing and mutual professional development" (Schmidt, 2020). I intend to apply this concept to my networking via conferences, professional nursing associations, and local organizations.
