The war on drugs has been waged, officially, since the 1970s, although the history of combating drug use goes much further than that. The criminalization of drug use can often be associated with the individuals identified with using those drugs and socio-political influences. However, the war on drugs moved from a federal problem to a local initiative when the federal government unofficially ended the war on drugs (Fields, 2009).

•Who was targeted by each phase of the war on drugs
•The social influences that drove some drugs to be criminalized while others were not.
