Colleague's Response
The assessment is the most important step that we take when forming a connection with our families. We start with listening and understanding what the starting point will look like. This step can structure how we move forward as we process how we can be most helpful in the process of laying a strong foundation. As we gather information in our assessment it will assist us in setting the tone. The family is requesting and sharing resources that are appropriate and beneficial. As stated, from there, the social worker and the client establish goals, define measurable objectives, identify concrete action steps, and formalize the helping relationship through an agreed upon plan or contract (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018).
When working with families we can look at them from the micro level, we take a look at the family and listen to their experience as they share their life story, and trust is formed and determines what can be done to reduce or resolve the issue. According to Kirst-Ashman and Hull (2018), They state that family can build rapport, present the issue, research contributing factors, identify resources and strengths.
This level gives you the chance to gather mental health, family issues, demographics, coping skills, past history,
Now looking at macro-level assessment, it looks very different. We look at the community, structures and the systems that may influence an individual. The social worker doesn't look at the individual but their surroundings. They look at policies within the organizations and how it can promote wellbeing. The macro-level will ensure the needs of the community are met.
I believe that communities at the macro-level may be reluctant to engage as they may fear that there isn't transparency as they collect data. Kirst-Ashman and Hull (2018) state, in these situations social workers must emphasize collaboration, transparency, and shared decision making to promote ethical and effective engagement.
