The Iliad is about the quest for immortality. Achilles was presented with two futures: to live a long "plain" life and die surrounded by family and loved ones, or to die young and be remembered forever. He chose a violent, early death but the immortality of remembrance. Odysseus is also offered two different futures. He could choose immortality by staying with Calypso forever but he chooses to go home to Ithaca. He chooses to age and die - to be mortal. Who do you think made the right choice?
