Euthanasia is the practice of intentionally ending a life to relieve intractable suffering. The practice is currently legal in several countries including the Netherlands, Canada, and Belgium. Currently in the United States active euthanasia remains illegal. Oregon, Washington, Vermont, and California have passed laws allowing physician assisted suicide, which has subtle differences than Euthanasia. In cases of euthanasia it is the physician who administers the means of death as opposed to physician assisted suicide where the patient themselves administers the means of death.
