Which is applied least often in your opinion to what extent

List the eight influence tactics described in this chapter in terms of how they are used by students to influence their university instructors. Which influence tactic is applied most often? Which is applied least often, in your opinion? To what extent is each influence tactic considered legitimate behavior or organizational politics?

Cite ideas from McShane and Von Glinow (2013) Chapter 10 to support your response.

Below is an example of what another student wrote on the message board

The eight influence tactics are silent authority, assertiveness, information control coalition formation, upward appeal, persuasion, ingratiation and impression management, and exchange. "The first five are known as shard influence tactics because they force behavior change through position power" (McShane & VonGlinlow, 2013, p.302).  The latter three "are called soft tactics because they rely more on personal sources of power and appeal to the target person's attitudes and needs" (McShane & VonGlinlow, 2013, p.302).  I believe that silent authority is used most often because it most people that wield real power don't need to make reference to having that power, it is implied.  The least used tactic has got to be exchange.  The reason I believe that exchange is the least used is because it implies that whatever resource that is sought after can't be obtained by any other means than by "promising benefits or resources in exchange for the target person's compliance" (McShane & VonGlinlow, 2013, p.302).  I think that if you reference back to the beginning of this response the legitimate behaviors are considered to be the "hard" tactics and the behaviors seen as organizational politics are the "soft" tactics which are more concerned with behavior manipulation and negotiation.
