I was listening to one of Rick Steve's programs on PBS the other night.
You know, he's the travel guy who does all these "let's tour Europe together" shows on PBS.
Well in this particular episode, he was commenting that everywhere that one goes in Europe, there is all this great art, magnificent centuries old art that has been shown publicly and admired for centuries, but that he cannot show images of the art on his PBS program because it's too "fleshy for American audiences" (his choice of words).
In other words, the art is nude, and for American sensibilities, it would be offensive. Yet in Europe, it's considered great art.
Which goes to show that what's considered offensive, depends to a very great extent on what your cultural context is. Comments?
