Which do you think is more accurate

Problem

In this chapter of the Selfish Gene, Dawkins focuses on family planning. One main theme discussed is the decision to have more children. According, to Dawkins, people who have fewer offspring do so in order to care for the offspring they already have (care for their genetic material that already exists in current children). However, the Wynne-Edwards hypothesis suggests that people have fewer offspring because they are considering the whole group of humans and are trying not to overpopulate. This hypotheses has a much more "cognitive" aspect, while Dawkin's explanation is much more genetic. That is, there could be a genetic component that leads to a reduction in births, particularly in certain individuals. Given these two explanations, which do you think is more accurate? How do you think people decide whether or not to have more children? From an evolutionary perspective, what do you think should be determining factors when people are making this decision?
