According to a recent WSJ article, Uber has made a smart move to cooperate with host government in negotiating agreements that bring the company into compliance with existing laws (Macmillan, Fleisher, Gunner, & Sugden, 2015). In contrast with the Google in China case, Google has chosen an avoidance strategy to close down some of their web services in China and redirected mainland Chinese users’ search results through Hong Kong (Efrati, & Batson, 2010). Which company has made a better decision in facing the confirmatory pressure from the host government? Did both companies have made the best decision given the circumstances? Then, what contingencies have made these two companies employ different strategies?
