Riddle and Sinclair (2019) examined whether racial disparities in school discipline were connected to levels of racial bias in the communities where schools are located. They used data from about 1.6 million people who completed the Project Implicit racial bias test and compared county-level bias estimates with discipline data from about 96,000 U.S. schools serving 32 million Black and White students. The study found that counties with higher levels of measured racial bias also had larger racial disparities in school discipline, with Black students more likely to be punished than White students for similar behaviors. This relationship was specific to racial bias and was not found with unrelated biases (like sexuality bias), suggesting a direct connection. The authors concluded that racial bias in communities is linked to unequal disciplinary practices in schools, highlighting the need to recognize and address bias to reduce disparities.
