Assignment task: Patient assisted suicide is when a patient requests his/her doctor to assist them with ending their lives due to a terminal illness that will leave them in immense pain and suffering.
This idea allows the patient to choose how they die and leave them with some dignity. With the topic of patient assisted suicide terminal sedation is also discussed. Terminal sedation is used in palliative care for terminally ill patients. Terminal sedation is when larger than usual doses are used so that terminally ill patient slip into a coma and die painlessly. When patients are terminally sedated no nutrition is given to them and some argue that is technique hastens death.
Which without nutrition a patient does ultimately die from starvation, but this allows them to be comfortable and to also choose to hold onto some dignity and how they die. Whether it be by physician assisted suicide or by terminal sedation.
