Where in the essay are facts that support your beliefs

Problem

Directions:

1. Using the Reader-Response model described in this presentation, use Mary Sherry's essay, "In Praise of the 'F' Word," (p 481) as the basis for your response.

2. Write an essay answering the question-Do you agree or disagree with Sherry's argument about failing students? What were the grading policies in schools you attended? Were failing grades given routinely or rarely? Were students passed based on attendance?

First Steps

Read the essay as many times as it takes to grasp its thesis

As you read, ask yourself these questions:

A. What is the author's thesis? Where in the essay does the author specifically state his or her thesis?
B. How does the author support his or her thesis? What are specific examples in the essay?
C. What do you agree or disagree with?
D. Where in the essay are facts that support your beliefs?
E. What experiences do you have about the topic, either personally or through others?
F. How do your past experiences shape your opinion and response?
