Unfortunately this case took place in 1992 my parents came from their country in the years or 1987 and 1988 they were barley even teenagers at the time. So I had to do the reading and learn about the case myself. They are the only people that I can ask as of right now and the same would go for my other family members that are my parents age and the older families also are not aware of this case. I do not believe that McDonald's should be held liable because it is her fault for placing the cup of coffee between her knees. It is coffee at the end of the day, if you take a sip of anything hot you will most likely burn your tongue. If Ms. Liebeck would have waited a few minutes for her coffee to warm up a bit that would not have happened, I understand that she was trying to add her creamer and sugar and the hotness of the coffee probably caused her to spill the coffee. But the cup could have stayed in the cup holder while she added the creamer and sugar. There could have been things that could have been done that could have prevented her from spilling the coffee. As mentioned the cup placed in cup holder, not placing coffee between knees, and she could have waited a few minutes to let the coffee to warm up. When it comes to the jury award was justified because they did find McDonald's liable and her liable to a certain extent so of course it was awarded, especially how high her medical bills were. But again, in my opinion I do not think McDonald's should be liable for it because there could have been a different outcome to the incident. Where I do find McDonald's at fault is that they did not correct the temperature of their coffees because it has happened to quite a few people including children. They willingly and knowingly continued to remain the temperature high for their coffees.
