What you have learned from your research process

Homework: AFAM 314

Length: 6 to 8 pages.

Students will be tasked with researching their specific dance form(s), choreographer(s), and/or performance(s) in depth in order to develop a culminating paper

Overview

The Public Intellectual research Project is a chance to choose your own adventure & hon your skill as emerging researchers and public scholars.

Instructions

Within this project, students will select a dance form(s), choreographer(s)/company(ies), and/or performance(s) that they are interested in studying further. For example, if I was completing this homework, I might choose to study Camille A. Brown, her performance Black Girl Linguistic Play, and the dance form Stepping (since it is used in Camille's work). Please note, that while you are welcome to choose a dance form/choreographer/performance that we have encountered within this class, you are also more than welcome to study something that we haven't encountered in the course.

Culminating papers should take into consideration:

o What you have learned from your research process?

o How you choose to speak and/or write about the physical movement you view?

o How you use critical analysis & inquiry to reflect on the performances you view?

o What are the larger theoretical, societal, and/or political contexts that might impact the dance form, choreographer's work, or the performances you are studying?

o Driven by our pursuit as public intellectuals, it is ultimate goal to have our research connect with audiences outside of the University Setting. So, how can you design your paper/video/podcast to effectively reach and be enjoyed by an audience outside of Academia. (e.g. how might you incorporate creativity to effectively reach this target audience; how might this goal effect the way you speak and/or write; etc.)

Format your homework according to the following formatting requirements:

o The answer should be typed, using Times New Roman font (size 12), double spaced, with one-inch margins on all sides.

o The response also includes a cover page containing the title of the homework, the student's name, the course title, and the date. The cover page is not included in the required page length.

o Also include a reference page. The Citations and references must follow APA format. The reference page is not included in the required page length.
