What you believe is the most serious social problem

Discussion 1

Think about your community. Identify what you believe is the most serious social problem in your community. Explain your choice - include in your discussion what makes it a social problem (i.e., versus social condition), what makes it a "serious social problem" (i.e., look at the subjective vs. the objective reality), and which of the sociological perspectives outlined in the textbook best fits your understanding of the social problem. Do social class, race, or ethnicity play a role in this problem?

Discussion 2: Diversity

Look at this example of one Diversity Wheel often used in the study/discussion of diversity and inequality.

Describe yourself based on the primary (center - basic self-image) and secondary (outer) characteristics identified in the Diversity Wheel. What social characteristics do you use most frequently to describe yourself to others (i.e., class, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age). Which of these are most essential to your identity and which of these reveals more about your life chances? Do any of these serve as social boundaries in your daily life?

Be sure that your response is at least 150 words and use some examples (and appropriately formatted citations and references, if applicable) to help illustrate your response.

• You must cite paraphrased information that was obtained from another source.

The response should include a reference list. Double-space, using Times New Roman 12 pnt font, one-inch margins, and APA style of writing and citations.
